Josh Gates Searches for Truth

Behind the World’s Most Iconic Legends

From lost cities to buried treasure and stolen art, the world abounds with fascinating, iconic legends. In Travel Channel’s new original series “Expedition Unknown,” premiering Thursday, January 8 with a special two-hour episode at 9 PM ET/PT.

Avid explorer Josh Gates sets out on a global journey in pursuit of answers to some of the world’s most puzzling stories. Armed with a degree in archaeology, a quick wit and a hunger for adventure, Gates investigates the latest developments in each unsolved legend before embarking on a fully immersive exploration.

To separate fact from fiction, Gates inserts himself in different cultures to understand the world as they do. Whether he’s trekking through Fiji in search of Amelia Earhart’s remains or diving the deep seas of Panama to locate Captain Morgan’s pirate ship, Gates’ authentic roughshod adventures lead him one step closer to finding the truth. “Expedition Unknown” is comprised of 11 hour-long episodes plus the two-hour premiere.

“I’ve traveled to nearly 100 countries, but still feel like I haven’t scratched the surface of what’s out there to explore,” says Gates. “There is such a deep well of fascinating and mystifying stories in the world, and each one connects so uniquely to different cultures. I’m driven by curiosity – and I’m on a mission to find answers.”

In the two-hour series premiere, Josh Gates embarks on an expedition to investigate what might be the most iconic unsolved event in the world – the disappearance of Amelia Earhart during her attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. Several incredible new leads in the story take Gates on an adventure through aviation history and remote areas of the world. These clues might finally lead to answers behind the greatest cold case in history.

Gates begins his expedition in Papua New Guinea, the location where Amelia Earhart’s plane last took off from before disappearing. Connecting with a remote tribe, Gates embarks on an arduous trek through the dense jungle to explore potential pieces of evidence.

Next, Gates heads to Fiji and turns his focus to the latest and most shocking piece of evidence to date. Noted aviation historian Ric Gillespie, the Executive Director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), has confirmed a piece of aluminum that washed up on the remote island of Nikumaroro in 1991 may, in fact, be a unique piece of sheeting installed on Earhart’s plane before her ill-fated flight.

Gates is intrigued to learn more about the human bones found on Nikumaroro more than 50 years ago. They were shipped to Fiji for safekeeping, but vanished upon arrival. In light of the recent findings, Gates heads to Suva, Fiji to launch a hunt for the lost bones – a crucial element that could finally put this mystery to rest. Clues lead him from the island’s archives to a traditional village in the distant jungles where he links up with John Grey – a Fijian who, in 1968, discovered a mysterious skull beneath his childhood home.

Gates is shocked to learn that not only has the skull has gone missing, but authorities never conducted a proper search for other remains in the area. Securing permission to conduct an investigation, Gates personally uncovers what appear to be human remains.

Could they possibly be the long-lost bones of Amelia Earhart? Potentially groundbreaking answers await, as the bones currently undergo scientific analysis.

Message from Josh Gates

“Over the last year, I’ve received thousands of emails, tweets, letters, mildly creepy packages, and the occasional shout from passing cars asking me about the future of Destination Truth.

I’ve been largely silent on the subject, and for that, I apologize.

After 5 straight seasons of chasing terrifying creatures and paranormal phenomena in the dead of night, I happily took some time off to kick back, treat a few strange rashes, and savor meals that didn’t have antennae sticking out of them. Honestly, it was just nice to take a shower.

I return to you now, bathed and de-liced, with some news – though it might not be the news you’re hoping for. After a great deal of discussion and consideration, I can now report that Destination Truth has sailed its last voyage.

Having reached the end of my second consecutive deal with NBC Universal, we decided that this was the right time to bring the series to a close.”

Syfy Host to Arrange Mysterious, Far-Flung Dinners Through Twitter And a Chance to “Steal” His Frequent Flyer Miles

Destination Dinner

Syfy Channel host Josh Gates is about to embark on all new adventures, and this time his fans are invited to come along. Gates made the surprise announcement during his panel at the C2E2 Expo in Chicago. “The fans of Destination Truth have been asking us for years how they can get involved with our travels. We loved the idea of bringing fans on the show, but it proved difficult. There are lots of considerations that have to be made at the network level, and the bottom line is that we just couldn’t make it happen as part of the show. So I decided to do it on my own,” Gates said.

The independent project, which Gates calls “Destination Dinner,” will allow fans to participate in an unprecedented travel opportunity. “Starting this summer, to coincide with the return of Destination Truth, I’m going to be personally hosting some very special dinners as a way of saying thank you to our amazingly loyal fans,” Gates announced. “And you’re all invited” he told the cheering crowd at C2E2.

As Gates pointed out, though, there’s a catch. The dinners will be staged in unusual locations around the world. “It could be a fish fry at floating village in Vietnam or a nomadic campfire BBQ in the Sahara Desert. I’ll be posting a date, a time and a place on Twitter @joshuagates, maybe just coordinates. And if you can make it there, an amazing dinner will be waiting for you – on me.”

Along with an exotic meal with one of the world’s most well traveled hosts, those who make the journey will also be rewarded with a custom guided tour of the destination, personally led by Gates. He also announced that a few lucky fans will also have a chance to dip into his frequent flyer miles. “It’s a well known fact that I am a depraved frequent flyer mile hoarder, and I got to thinking that without the fans of Destination Truth, I wouldn’t have nearly so many miles. It only seems fair that they should have a chance to steal some of those miles back.”

At each of the dinners, one guest will not only get a free meal, but have all of their airfare covered as well. “I’ve devoted the last four years to travel-adventure television, and I’ve always say that I want the fans to feel like they’re out there with me in the field. Now they can be,” Gates concluded. “I hope this little project will excite people to embark on their very own travels, and I’ll be waiting to toast them when they arrive.”

Destination Dinner is an independent project organized by Josh Gates and is not affiliated with NBC Universal, Syfy, or Ping Pong Productions.

Official rules and eligibility will be announced on Twitter by @joshuagates with the hashtags #DestinationDinner and #StealMyMiles.
