“They’ve evacuated my area. Scary scary night ahead.” – Jason

“Check off the bucket list, experience a tsunami in Hawaii. HOLY CRAP warning sirens going off now…” – Britt Griffith

“Getting to higher ground, Tsunami sirens are going off. Thanks for the concerned tweets…so sad to hear of the devastation in Japan.” – Amy

“Filming has put us through blizzards, flooding, hurricanes, tornados, fires, explosions and now, tsunamis. Not much left on that list…” – Grant

Jason did a couple of phone interviews.

Tweets After..

“Back in my room. Tsunami hasn’t been as bad as predicted so far, thank goodness. Safe and snug on the 18th floor though…” – Amy

“So, first week in Hawaii, a volcano goes off, our hotel catches fire and tsunami hits the island. I can’t wait for week two….” – Britt

“Survived the tsunami. It wasn’t as bad as they predicted. All is well. Thank you for the prayers and well wishes!” – Grant

(Grant is also urging all that can to donate to the Japan earthquake and tsunami relief)

“All is well in Hawaii. Just woke up after a needed rest. What a night! Looking forward to the rest of the stay and praying for those in Japan.” – Adam Berry

Just in time for Halloween, the ghosts will say ‘Who’ not ‘Boo’ on a special episode of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” airing October 29, featuring Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, the lead paranormal investigators and stars of the Syfy series “Ghost Hunters.” Viewers looking for a scarily good time should check their local listings (nationally syndicated, find listings at www.millionairetv.com).

Hawes and Wilson will appear together as contestants on the Halloween-themed episode of Millionaire and will be able to discuss the questions and possible answers with each other, before giving their “Final Answer” to host Meredith Vieira.

The duo will have to correctly answer 14 trivia questions in order to take home the show’s top prize of $1-million. New for this season, the first ten questions and the money values attached to those questions are both now randomly shuffled, adding to the excitement and unpredictability of game play. Hawes and Wilson will have three lifelines – “Ask The Audience” and two “Jump The Question” lifelines, which will enable them to jump over a question, but require them to forfeit the dollar amount attached to the question.

Hawes and Wilson will donate all of their team’s winnings to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, RI, an organization that provides a network of pediatric services and is located near the Ghost Hunters home base in Warwick, RI.

The Ghost Hunters duo said, “Kids are so important to us. They are the future. The stronger we make them, the stronger the future will be for them. Hasbro Children’s Hospital is blazing the trail in how to treat chronically ill children and is making these kids feel comfortable, important, loved and strong. They are the model for true compassionate care.”

“Ghost Hunters” investigators Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson may visit Fort Knox for the Syfy series.

The suspected ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night at Fort Knox may be getting a visit from television paranormal investigators the “Ghost Hunters.”

The producer of the SyFy channel’s “Ghost Hunters” series and Leon Seymour, executive director of Friends of Fort Knox, are discussing the possibility of filming a segment of the show at the fort. Story Producer Patrick Powell on Monday confirmed the show’s interest in the fort, but declined to discuss the matter until details had been completed.

“We can make it happen,” Seymour said this week. The fort was constructed between 1844 and 1869, and although troops were housed there during the Civil War, the fort never saw any action. And though no one actually died inside the fort, several people have reported hearing voices and seeing images inside.

At least one psychic has confirmed the existence of spirits in the fort. Some have suggested the spirits are those of a solider who had strong ties to the fort, such as Sgt. Leopold Hegyi, who served there for 13 years and died in the house where he lived across the road from the fort.

In addition to many unexplained experiences, visitors, over the years, perhaps sensing something in the fort, have asked guides about the possibility that the place is haunted.

The Friends organization helps to bolster that idea of ghosts with its annual Psychic and Paranormal Fair and the Fright at the Fort celebration at Halloween in which real-life spooks haunt the dank and dark alleys inside the fort.

Seymour stressed, however, that the Friends group has not taken any position on whether there are ghosts at the fort, but he said the “Ghost Hunters” investigation could be a boon for the fort and the surrounding area.

“A television show that is seen by millions will certainly put the area on the map,” he said. “It would focus attention on the fort and the observatory, and increase visitation, which can only be a benefit for everyone, except maybe the ghosts who might be disturbed.”

In recent years, several local paranormal groups, such as Bangor Ghost Hunters, Central Maine Paranormal and Maine Supernatural, have conducted investigations at the fort and have posted their results on their Web sites. According to Seymour, the Bangor Ghost Hunters were featured on a local television news program where they offered their opinion that the fort is indeed haunted.

The SyFy Channel’s “Ghost Hunters” is a one-hour weekly reality show that follows a group of real-life paranormal researchers as they investigate hauntings throughout the country, according to the show Web site. Led by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, plumbers by trade who head the Atlantic Paranormal Society, the team investigates “seemingly unexplainable disturbances.”

Seymour said he has contacted the Maine Department of Conservation’s Bureau of Public Lands, which manages the fort, for approval to have the TV crew film there. He said he is awaiting an activity permit for the shoot from Public Lands.

There has been some local interest in the program, and Seymour said he already has forwarded about 10 names of area residents who have expressed a willingness to be interviewed for the show. Despite Maine’s winter cold temperature and heavy snowstorms such as the one last weekend, Seymour said the producers indicated the “Ghost Hunters” could arrive in town as soon as February.

Posted in Around Town by Christina Couch on October 23rd, 2009.

Before going to the “Ghost Hunters Live” presentation at Harper College last night, I knew the Syfy show was popular. I even knew that America’s favorite plumbers-turned-ghoul-getters were leading the ratings among paranormal-themed shows. But I had no clue just how large and zealous their fan base is. The day after Ghost Hunters aired its investigation of the Congress Theater, more than 1,500 people flooded the Harper College gymnasium.

Though I’d only planned on attending the show, the Harper PR rep gave me three on-the-fly minutes with Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson before the show began. Thankfully, they were pretty cool about answering a few questions from a totally unprepared reporter.

TOC: You guys seem to have a huge fan base and an equally huge group out to debunk you. Does that bother you?

Grant Wilson: Ha ha ha, no. That’s what we want. We want everyone to be a skeptic. We’re skeptics. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be trying to debunk this stuff. We encourage people to ask questions. Actually, at the last place we spoke, a girl who couldn’t have been older than nine stood up at the end of our presentation and asked, “Yeah, but have you seen any real paranormal stuff?” I thought that was great. That’s the best question we’ve gotten so far.

TOC: It seems a ton of shows out now are trying to do the same things you guys do. Do you feel there’s stiffer competition in the televised ghost-hunting field?

Jason Hawes: Not really. They’re not on at the same time, and they’re not doing things in the same way. TAPS [the Atlantic Paranormal Society] has been around since 1990, so we were doing this long before the show. We’re out looking for the truth and if someone else is doing that too, that’s cool.

TOC: What can we expect from the next season?

GW: We just started filming 27 episodes for 2010.

TOC: Where?

GW: We can’t say. We can tell you we’re getting a ton of new equipment. This season we’re going to have 360-degree cameras, full-spectrum video cameras, a hand-held X-ray gun so we can shoot at one point on a wall and see through. We’re pretty excited.

TOC: Favorite place you guys have been?

JH: The Stanley Hotel [in Estes Park, Colorado]. We’ve been there, what, 14 times now and it never disappoints.

TOC: What’s the creepiest thing you’ve ever seen?

JH: Homeowners. Everyone asks us this question and it’s the people who own the homes that are the scariest.

GW: A ghost might move around furniture, but it won’t ever pull a gun on you. People are the ones you should be afraid of.

TOC: Someone actually pulled a gun on you guys?

GW: Yeah, we were checking out this woman’s house and she pulled a shot gun on us. Unfortunately, she also committed suicide six months later. We didn’t put that on the show, but it happened.

And then it was show time. Hawes and Wilson entered the gym to find a sea of fans sporting Ghost Hunters T-shirts and applauding thunderously. The presentation opened with an explanation of who the Ghost Hunters are (two Rhode Island–based plumbers who offer free paranormal investigations to homeowners worried they’re sharing their house with ghosts) and who they’re not (doctors, scientists, psychic-haters). The duo then presented a few cases they’d debunked for reasons ranging from clients seeing apparitions due to sleeping close to an alarm clock with a surprisingly strong electromagnetic field, to ghosts appearing as a result of a client’s drug use. Said Wilson, “In that case, we found the ghost of Mary Jane.”

Wilson and Hawes presented some evidence they’ve collected through the years, including video clips and sound recordings of supposedly real paranormal activity. While the evidence was undoubtedly creepy—the worst of which was a clip filmed at the Stanley Hotel that shows a glass in Hawes’s bedroom shattering apropos of nothing—the clips are also difficult to make out, both visually and audibly, leaving some degree of doubt. For those (like me) who weren’t blown away by the evidence itself, it was still interesting to hear Wilson and Hawes’s stories about their travels, their fans and their clients, particularly the one who lured Hawes into her haunted basement to get a…ahem, private investigation…while Wilson sat with her husband upstairs.

Questions and stories from the audience were just as fascinating: One guy believed a ghost was making his car alarm go off in direct sunlight; a young woman claimed to have had a ghost walk through her.

Believe the hype or not, Wilson and Hawes certainly proved that there’s a strong market for people looking for answers about the afterlife and that Ghost Hunters is at the helm. When the program began, Wilson responded to the near-deafening applause by simply asking, “Who are we? Guns N Roses?” To this crowd, absolutely.

Maintaining its status as far and away the #1 paranormal investigation series on all of television, Ghost Hunters drew season highs in Household ratings (2.2) and total viewers (3.1 million) during its telecast last night on Wednesday, October 21, airing from 9-10 PM ET/PT.

The episode, featuring an investigation at Chicago’s Congress Theater, posted a season high in Adults 18-49 (1.81 million), while also delivering 1.9 million Adults 25-54.

Ghost Hunters more than doubled the audience totals for this week’s new episodes of the competing paranormal series Ghost Lab on Discovery and Extreme Paranormal on A&E.

In October 2004, Syfy introduced Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson plumbers by day, Ghost Hunters by night! The success of its spin-off series, Ghost Hunters International, cemented the Ghost Hunters brand as the top paranormal franchise in cable. The franchise just expanded further with the green light of a brand-new series, Ghost Hunters Academy (premiering November 11, 2009 @ 10 PM).
