Why Grant Left Ghost Hunters

Grant Wilson Responds to the Rumors

Why I Left the Show

All of the above!

JUST KIDDING! My, how the rumors fly. Everyone insists that something devastating had to happen to kick me off of TV and back into the doldrums of normal everyday life. Everyone aspires to be on TV right?

Well, it is far less complicated and dreadful as all that. I have no regrets and I loved doing it. It was just time to move on.

We were filming for nearly every week of the year, Monday-Friday, sometimes more. I felt that after eight years, I had sufficiently reached my goals in spreading awareness and acceptance of the paranormal. Those eight years on the road were kicking my butt and I was ready to be back with my family and pursue other aspects of my life.

That’s it. Simple, right?

The rumor mill is quite the efficient machine.

Here are some other reasons:

1. Life in a Box – You spend most of your life in a box; house to car to airport to plane to car to hotel, always in a box. I am an outdoor guy. My idea of a temple is being on top of a mountain. I remember on one occasion I arrived at my hotel by night and went right to bed. When I awoke, I ripped open the curtains to see the view I had. The only non-man-made thing I could see was the sky. Ugh… Give me the woods, please.

2. Sleep? What’s Sleep? – When you are on the road you are at the mercy of airline flight schedules. When you are a paranormal investigator you go to bed at ungodly hours. The combination is devastating. One night you go to bed at 6:00am. Then, you wake up at 2pm looking for breakfast. Then you have to go to bed that night at 9pm to catch a flight at 7am. Ouch. Eight years of that, and you just give up on sleep. Giving up on sleep isn’t good for your health.

3. Fine Dining – Eating out is fun and a treat for most people. When you have to eat out for every meal is destroys your health. No matter how healthy you try to eat, you always feel like crap.

4. Halloween – My kids are growing up really really quickly, (if you are a parent you know exactly what I mean.) While filming the Live Halloween Show was always a challenge and lots of fun, I want to spend Halloween with my kids.

5. Super Dad/Husband – It was really hard to come home from a whacky week of sleep schedules, bad meals, and boxes and snap into a normal-life routine. It was not easy to get all of my face-time in with the kids and my lovely and ever-patient wife within two days. Not to mention missed concerts, sporting events, art shows, date nights. Bleh…

So, at the risk of sounding like a whiner, that is just a quick glance into some of the reasons it was tough and why I made the decision to move on. With each year, the effect of the above situations magnified. I wish the show the best and hope it is successful for many years to come.

As for me, I will be wearing the biggest smile on my face as I dive head-first into art, music and writing.

Thanks for sticking by me through this.

(Oh, by the way, I haven’t been wearing my wedding ring because my wife surprised me with a beautifully custom made ring that I love, but my finger has a reaction to it. We are trying to figure out a solution.)

I have an allergy to zinc and I cannot wear anything on my body that is not pure gold or silver. You might have the same thing. Maybe you can coat the ring with a sealer. As for the rumors. Screw them. Go have fun. Your kids are only young for a brief moment in time. Don’t miss that.

My daughter and I have watched you and the gang for years. She’s 12 now. We are both pretty big fans. We will continue to watch and hope you stop by from time to time.

Being a paranormal investigator myself in Pittsburgh, I know the routine well and really appreciate all you’ve done for us and everyone else. Being a parent myself, I understand and respect your decision. Glad there wasn’t any truth to all the bad rumors. However, I agree with many of your fans ….. and that is, that you are greatly missed. The show is not the same without you. It’s still one of my favorite shows but it feels that its missing something and that is you. I keep hoping you can make a surprise appearance (or two) in the future. Maybe even write a book! Regardless, I wish you the best and may GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ALWAYS!!!!! : )

  17. Janet says:

Grant thank you for all the enjoyment you brought to my son and I. Family is so important and you have made the right choice. God bless and happy trails, Janet

(PS)I applied for a plumbing job to follow in your footsteps I enjoy helping others and enjoyed seeing you and your team do the same. You are an inspiration. Please take care of yourself and god bless. 🙂 *Take care) I also do my own investigations also in my local area.

  23. D. Price says:

Not sure how long Mr. Wilson’s reply to all speculation has been posted, but just ran across it.

All I have to say is good luck and best wishes to him, because leaving for the reasons he has is VERY commendable. I respect his decision to leave the show and be with his family. It show’s a commitment which not many who desire fame are not willing to do.

I don’t think he really was about the fame, like maybe some of the others, as much as like he said bring awareness to the paranormal, which I think he did a fine job of doing.

So with that said I wish them all a peaceful, and happy life.

  24. Tom says:

    Grant is back!!!!! AWESOME

  25. SShaplin says:

To me you were the integrity of what TAPS is about. I find this lacking now. Good luck to you and your family.

  26. Andrew says:

Grant cant wait to see you and the TAPS team again on syfy I will be watching with my two older kids they love the show. Thanks for being the best show on TV.

  27. barb says:

Good for you , Grant, wishing you and yours all the best. I miss seeing you on the show but I totally understand. I think very few people know when it’s time to move on. As for the ring , try painting the inside with clear fingernail polish it helps. You may need to do it from time to time. God bless you and yours, enjoy each other , life is short. fan of the show, Barb E

  28. Paul Otts says:

Grant, from your explanatory statement, I can only say that of all the Ghost Hunters, you have to be the most grounded and the most sensible. I would be thrilled if I had the chance to meet you face to face.

  29. Anonymous says:

    Good 4 u Grant ????

  30. Teri says:

Grant, To me, you were the Heart of GH, and that is sorely lacking now. I miss your calmness in the eye of the storm, but applaud your decision to be with your family. You took a large part of the show’s soul when you left, and Your fans will miss you terribly. I hope to see you on the occasional special.

  31. Betty says:

I missed you from last season and this one. It was nice to see you and the others on the 200 eps. You are missed and may you always have what you are doing.

  32. Joseph Jr says:

As fans of the show we can be quite selfish. I never once believed that it was some tragic happening in your life that got you to leave the show. As with the others there were times when the fatigue showed in your eyes and/or just the way you would acted. Family always has to be first. It is refreshing to see that your love for them far out weighed the show. I do hope you still go on paranormal cases once in a while. Thank you for 9 entertaining years and your professionalism. God Bless , wish you and your family the best.

  33. Wendy says:

You will be missed! I love the GH and can’t wait until the next season. I was hoping that after you appeared in the 200th episode that you would be coming back to the show, guess not. However, I hope you’ll make future guest appearances.

As for your ring issue, apparently you must be allergic to one of the metals in it. So what I would recommend is if you take some clear nail polish and coat the inside of it that should put a barrier between you and the metal and you should be just fine and it won’t damage your ring. I wish you and your family all the best.

  34. gloria1026 says:

sorry to hear about the show but family comes first and if you think that the show is slitting yu and your family apart then you did the right thing and take care of your family first miss yu on the show but pop in once in a while hope you and your family have a happy holiday. Hope to see you soon

  35. Family of fans says:

Grant, we think you are a great guy. Always a nice personality and professional and very friendly and easy-going the entire time you were on the show. The episodes you have done remain our favorites–Steve and Tango are also funny and nice, but we could tell you are a very family-oriented guy. You refused to swear–we miss the way you would say, “what the fetch?” , so as not to swear–because you knew kids DO watch the show. So glad that you came back for the anniversary. It was the best part. We all still remember a few years ago, at the hotel–“the Princess” addressing you, after you asked her if she was there. Perhaps someday you’ll do a few more Ghost Hunters episodes, because you are our favorite TAPS member. Best of luck, and you were right to do what’s best for your family life. Thanks for putting a normal and friendly aspect to a sometimes creepy part of life.

  36. Melody says:

    Hi Grant,

I used to live in your State but left several years ago and stopped
watching GH. But it is good that you made a decision that was
best for yourself and your family.

The best of luck to you and have a wonderful Holiday season.

  37. Tammy says:

We miss you, however it is no ones business why you left the show we just miss you and hope one day you’ll return.

  38. Barb says:

Good luck to you in your future & to your family. You are missed. It just doesn’t seem right without you investigating with Jason. Maybe you can do an episoide with GHI someday. I hope no one else leaves the show because it just wouldn’t be the same if anyone else left. Thanks for the years that you were there.

  39. Big peg says:

I’ m sorry you left but really get it about the time and travel and bad meals. Don’t miss the growing up years with your kids. You can never get that time back. I love GH!!! All the fans of the show will miss your input and smile. The rest of the crew are carrying on well, but your special spot is empty and always will be. All the very best to you and your family.

  40. austin says:

I know what you mean, sometimes we have to put family frist even if realy injoy what we are doing, But are realy missed on the show.

  41. Marilyn ferrell says:

i know what you mean by time goes by so fast.I loved halloween with my kids.Even i loved your halloween show you needed to be home with your awsome wife nad kids every minute you can.Life is too short.I miss you on the show, but now there is no show and that really sucks foe us,But we all understand why you left.So good luck stay healthy and safe.Love ya Grant

  42. Craig Grimes says:

You did the rite thing Grant. I nearly lost my family because I was working all the time. Good luck to you.

  43. danny says:

seems to me that as soon as grant left things ramped up on the show like maybe they had decided to go more for entertainment than debunking and possibly grant was not into that so he left but he does not want to say i find that very respectful

  44. Michael - Easthampton MA says:

I spent 8 years on the road for my business in the 1990’s – cost me my marriage, my horse farm…everything….and traveling like a madman sucked…I would wake up in hotels after getting in late from the airports and forget what town I was in!
    Life is short….embrace it.

  45. Emily says:

  46. Robb Caldwell says:

You are really missed, Grant. After reading your piece, though, I get it. If there can ever be a compromise, though, that would be great! Maybe appear on episodes as a walk-on during taping for ghost hunts only in your area. By the way, if Jason could have his family on, why didn’t we ever get to see yours? Oh, well, we sure do miss ya, Grant. Just not the same. Thanks for all the hard work!! Robb
